EUGENE, Ore. — University of Colorado senior-to-be Emma Coburn won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Sunday at the U.S. track and field championships.
Coburn, the 2011 Big 12 and NCAA champion, won her first U.S. national title in 9 minutes, 44.11 seconds and earned a spot in the August world championships in Daegu, South Korea.
CU junior-to-be Shalaya Kipp finished ninth in the steeplechase in 10:01.85. Former Colorado State standout Kristen Hemphill finished 15th.
CU volunteer coach and former Buffaloes standout Jeremy Dodson, who attended George Washington High School, earned a spot on the U.S. international roster by placing third in the 200-meter dash. Dodson’s time was a wind-aided 20.07 seconds. Walter Dix won the race in 19.95.
Adams State throws coach John Ybarra finished 18th in the shot put.
Vettel wins again
VALENCIA, Spain — Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won his sixth race of the season at the European Grand Prix, building on his already commanding Formula One series lead.
Vettel beat Fernando Alonso of Ferrari by 10.891 seconds. It was the German’s fifth win this season starting as the polesitter.
• Mike Neff raced to his third funny car win of the season, beating Ron Capps in the final of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Conn.
Del Worsham (top fuel), Vincent Nobile (pro stock) and Eddie Krawiec (pro stock motorcycle) also won their divisions.
Smyth reunited with Oilers
EDMONTON, Alberta — The Los Angeles Kings traded veteran Ryan Smyth to the Edmonton Oilers for forward Colin Fraser and a seventh-round pick in the 2012 draft.
The 35-year-old Smyth had 23 goals and 24 assists in 82 games last season with Los Angeles. He started his NHL career with the Oilers in 1994 and spent more than a decade with the team before spending a short time with the Islanders and a season and a half with the Avs.
Silver Stars sizzling in WNBA
ATLANTA — Jia Perkins scored 25 points for the San Antonio Silver Stars, who beat the Atlanta Dream 92-86 and improved to an WNBA- best 6-1 record.
• Katie Douglas‘ 22 points helped the Indiana Fever beat the host Minnesota Lynx 78-75.
• Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points, leading the New York Liberty to a 77-67 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Sparks.
• Crystal Langhorne scored 23 points for the host Washington Mystics, who snapped a four-game losing streak with an 83-63 rout of the Tulsa Shock.
Sounders defeat Revolution
SEATTLE — Tyson Wahl and Alvaro Fernandez scored six minutes apart late in the first half, rallying the Seattle Sounders to a 2-1 MLS victory over the New England Revolution.
• Marco Pappa‘s long-distance goal in the 58th minute lifted the Chicago Fire to a 1-1 tie with the New York Red Bulls.
