Authorities today identified the kayaker killed on the Eagle River as 31-year-old John Novak of Minturn.
Novak’s kayak overturned near the Eagle County Fairgrounds at about 2:40 p.m. Saturday, according the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.
The Eagle River, like many waterways in the high country, is swollen with snowmelt, which has increased with rising temperatures this weekend, authorities warned.
Novak is at least the fourth river fatality this month and the second this week. Frank Diskin, 69, of Parsons, Kan., drowned in a rafting accident Thursday, when four people were swept in the water. Another in the group suffered a broken leg.
