BOULDER, Colo.—Cooler weather has helped crews contain 40 percent of a 60-acre wildfire in a canyon northwest of Boulder.

The fire was previously estimated at 100 acres, but fire managers got a better look Monday.

Residents of 340 homeowners are still on standby to evacuate if the fire gets closer. Fire officials say warmer and windier weather expected Tuesday could hamper their efforts.

Authorities say the Maxwell fire started Sunday near a shooting range but the cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

In southern Colorado, crews are still fighting a wildfire burning on 7 square miles. The Duckett fire grew a bit over the weekend in hot, windy conditions but isn’t threatening any homes.

Most the growth has been in a steep, rugged terrain in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
