A truck driver apparently was unaware the crane boom on his vehicle was extended this afternoon when he knocked down or damaged a series of power lines and poles on Blakeland Drive in Highlands Ranch this afternoon.
Littleton Fire-Rescue Division Chief Doug Ireland said at least three poles were knocked down and several more were damaged.
Blakeland Drive is primarily an industrial area, he said, but power has been knocked out to a number of businesses in the area starting at 5:40 p.m.
The accident knocked out power to the traffic signal at Blakeland and Santa Fe Drive and caused traffic tie-ups in the busy area.
Ireland said he did not yet know the circumstances that led to the truck hitting the power lines and poles or the name of driver’s employer. The cause is under investigation.
“Right now our main concern is security the safety hazards,” he said at about 6:10 p.m.
Xcel said electricity should be restored by about 9 p.m.
The area, immediately south of C-470, near the Litleton Fire-Rescue station 16 at 8119 Blakeland Drive.
