Worst-case scenario: Boulder’s electric rates increase up to 15 percent

Boulder residents could end up paying 7 to 15 percent more on their electricity bills if the city leaves Xcel Energy in favor of forming a municipal utility, under a worst-case scenario.

That’s according to a new assessment by city officials that was made public Tuesday.

Last year, the city’s franchise agreement with Xcel expired. Now, the Boulder City Council is considering whether to stick with Xcel or start a municipal utility. In either case, the city is looking to provide a greater percentage of renewable energy to customers.

City staffers told a crowd of more than 100 people at a meeting Tuesday night that the average residential electricity bills could increase $6 to $15 a month if the city ends up going the way of a municipal utility and the costs end up being more than expected.
