Sheila Schultz can barely contain her enthusiasm for container gardens, her specialty for 20 years.

“I consider containers paintings with plants,” Schultz said.

Doing business as Denver Dirty Girls, she cleaned up in Fine Gardening magazine’s Container Challenge, claiming national prizes in 2007, ’09 and ’10.

Schultz sings the praises of versatile mini-gardens in containers.

“They can brighten up a front porch or patio. They can add color where you have a dead spot. They’re growing more popular with so many people moving from houses to condos or apartments. Edibles in containers is now huge for people who don’t have room for a vegetable garden per se.”

Plus, containers eliminate gardening’s more-strenuous, less-savory aspects, namely soil amendment and weeding.

“You get instant gratification, and you don’t have to devote all of your free time to maintenance,” Schultz said.

Here are her tips for more beautiful, bountiful containers.
