The man who had been caring for an 11-month-old Windsor girl who died on Wednesday in a home child care facility has apparently killed himself.
The body of Garrett Moore, 35, of Windsor was found near the Pawnee Buttes Grasslands. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Windsor Police Chief John Michaels told the Greeley Tribune his office was notified early this morning of Moore’s suicide.
“This is a tragic story that just keeps getting worse,” Michaels told the paper.
Weld County Sheriff’s spokesman Maggie Martinez said that the search for Moore began Thursday when his family reported that they were unable to locate him after he had made statements “relative to being despondent.”
One location they suspected he could have gone was the Pawnee Buttes Grasslands.
Thursday night, Weld County Sheriff’s deputies located Moore’s car near County Road 45 and County Road 108, but weren’t able to locate his body until this morning when they returned to search in daylight, on horseback.
“He was found just 200 yards away from his vehicle, but he was behind a ridge,” Martinez said.
Martinez would not comment on Monday’s accident because it remains an investigation under Windsor Police.
Moore was caring for Kalea Mummery and 12 other children on Monday under the childcare license issued to his mother, Janette Moore.
Kalea’s head wedged between a mattress and the side of the crib, cutting off her air. She was taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora and her family removed her life support on Wednesday.
