A family dispute Tuesday morning in Loveland left the father shot to death and the son, an investigator for the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, embroiled in the investigation, authorities said today.

Patrick Canaga, 51, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard of his son’s home in the 900 block of Daphne Drive at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He died later at the hospital.

Investigator Matthew Canaga, 25, was at home at the time of the shooting, but he has not been charged.

“The investigation into this incident is continuing and will include investigating a potential defense of self-defense or the defense of others,” the Loveland Police Department said in a statement.

“Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the Larimer County District Attorney’s office will screen the full investigation and make a determination regarding formal charges if any are appropriate.”

Police said anyone with information “relative to this incident” can call Detective Brian Koopman at 970-962-2248.
