Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier — not Rockies first baseman Todd Helton — has been named to replace Philadelphia’ Shane Victorino on the National League roster for Tuesday’s 82nd All-Star Game.
The announcement was made today by Major League Baseball.
Victorino, the winner of the 2011 All-Star Game vote for the final spot on the roster, has was placed on the disabled list today because of a thumb injury. Ethier finished second behind Victorino in the fan voting, so he got the nod ahead of Helton, who finished third.
Ethier becomes an all-star for the second consecutive season. The Arizona native is batting .313 with 23 doubles, seven home runs, 42 RBI and 43 runs scored. Ethier had a major league season-best 30-game hitting streak earlier this year.
Helton, rebounding from a sub-par 2010 season, is hitting .315 with nine homers, 16 doubles, and 39 RBIs.
