“Pulling for Colorado”
Gardeners can learn about the area’s noxious weeds today during this event at Bear Creek State Park, at Morrison Road and C-470. Sponsored by the city of Lakewood and the Colorado Weed Management Association, event registration and breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Participants will spend some time pulling weeds. Durango’s La Plata County Fairgrounds are the site of this weekend’s 58th Annual Four Corners Gem & Mineral Show. The long- standing event features dozens of vendors selling artwork, jewelry, fossils, minerals, beads, tools and more. There are also food vendors and kids activities. The Dumb Friends League is looking for “pinup pets” for its 2012 calendar. Through the end of July, pet owners can submit photographs of fetching cats, dog and other animals for a chance to be featured as a “Pet of the Month.” Contest submissions are accepted online at or by mail. All entries must be postmarked by Aug. 1, and the entry fee is $35 per photograph, with proceeds benefiting the Dumb Friends League.
“Ugly” is in the eye of the beholder
One local resident with the dubious honor of owning the “Ugliest Home in Denver” could win a $500 Home Depot gift card. Through July 22, HomeVesters of America, the company behind those ubiquitous “We Buy Ugly Houses” billboards, has issued an open invite to anyone in Denver to vote in its ugly-house contest. “We all win when ugly houses are improved to become lovely ones,” a company spokesman said in a statement about the contest.
