A man accused of killing his ex-wife in a suicide pact in 2008 was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole.

Keenu Tiyme, 37, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but in May a Denver jury determined he was guilty of first-degree murder. The murder happened on Oct. 18, 2008. Tiyme had rented a motel room with his ex-wife. Kauri Tiyme, 39, a tattoo artist.

Kauri Tiyme was cut multiple times, drugged, choked and bashed in the head, and her throat was slit. Police found sleeping pills, a scalpel and rat poison in the room. Her body was found the next day by a housekeeper.

During trial, Keenu Tiyme argued that the pair had considered multiple ways to die before checking into the hotel. He said he tried to kill himself, too, but ultimately couldn’t.
