The money is not banked, nor is the check even in the mail. But Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport managers say they are optimistic that Congress will come through with Federal Aviation Administration funding for a $6.9 million rebuilding of the airport’s runway this summer.

If FAA funds are secured, the project would mean a 16-day shutdown of the airport next month while the work progresses on a day-and-night schedule.

The low bidder on the project, Coulson Excavating Co., has been putting gentle pressure on Colorado’s congressional delegation to get the ball rolling in Congress to move the money through the FAA.

Allegiant Air, the provider of scheduled passenger service between Loveland and Las Vegas and Phoenix, for the past five months has blocked out travel bookings between Aug. 15 and Sept. 1 in anticipation of the airport project.

The project had been scheduled for last summer but was abruptly canceled when the FAA failed to fund it.

Loveland Public Works Director Keith Reester, who was acting airport manager after Gordon’s departure, said Thursday he is confident the airport would “get the go-ahead money-wise for the runway project.”
