North Carolina-based pop-roots act started their two-night stand in Colorado with a good-vibes show on Friday night that felt as good as it sounded. The sound was thoroughly dialed in, and so were they.
Tickets were tough for this gig, with the band’s pre-sale selling out in just a few minutes. And surely the band felt the love in a room they’ve played four or five times before.
Kicking things off with a cover of David Childers’ “The Prettiest Thing,” the group looked confident and sounded unified – with bassist Bob Crawford even taking the cover’s entire middle verse. After a few quick new ones, “Tin Man” and “And it Spread,” the band threw down a couple older favorites – “Salina” and “Distraction #74” – with an emotional take on the new “Head Full of Doubt, Road Full of Promise” and a spirited take on the new “Kick Drum Heart.”
The show was a lively and fun lead-in to , and it was also a testament to how far they’ve come since the days of playing to a half-full Boulder Theater years ago at the beginning of its “Emotionalism” album cycle.
