Much in the way Best Buy expanded its business with the Geek Squad service, Comcast is launching a new program that offers round-the- clock technical support and extended warranties on consumer electronics.

The cable-TV and broadband giant officially rolls out the Xfinity Signature Support service in Colorado and across the country today.

The growing use of digital devices such as smartphones, Wi-Fi-enabled printers and tablets played a role in Comcast’s decision to pursue the new line of business, a top executive said Tuesday.

“The complexities of the digital home continue to grow,” said Mitch Bowling, senior vice president of new business for Comcast. “While those devices are great, what also comes with that is the need to connect them all together or connect them to your home network.”

Bowling also cited a 2010 report by Parks Associates that found more than 50 percent of Americans with broadband service look to their provider as the first or second option in solving home computer-related issues.

Previously, when a consumer sought help setting up a home printer, Comcast would refer them to the equipment manufacturer. Comcast will now provide professional tech support over the phone to Signature Support customers.

Recurring tech support starts at $4.95 a month and equipment protection plans start at $3.95 a month. One-time equipment set-up and installation assistance starts at $49.95. On-site support carries additional fees.

Comcast serves about 800,000 subscribers in Colorado. The company plans to launch a broadband-based home alarm security service in Colorado early next year.
