In a 2-1 vote Tuesday, the Gunnison County commissioners approved permits sought by two oil-and-gas companies to expand operations by digging lined pits to hold fracking fluids and water from wells.

Gunnison Energy and Houston-based Sg Interests want to build the pits upstream from the Paonia Reservoir, which supplies irrigation water to the area that grows much of Colorado’s apples and cherries.

The conservation group High Country Citizens Alliance said that while the pits can be well-made, they can leak and pose risks to wildlife, recreation and water quality.
