The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has selected a site for a new temple in Fort Collins at the southeast corner of Trilby and Timberline roads.

The Fort Collins Temple will be the second in Colorado and 158th worldwide. The Denver Temple was dedicated in 1986.

Construction of the Fort Collins Temple will begin next year and is expected to take two years to complete, officials said. The temple site is across the street from an existing LDS chapel.

LDS or Mormon temples are not places of regular Sunday congregational worship. They are built specifically for “eternal marriages” and other individual and family-centered ceremonies.

The Latter-day Saints teach that family relationships on earth continue after death, but to last beyond mortality marriages must take place in a temple, according to a church website. Couples who join the Church after they are already married may also have their marriages “sealed” in identical ceremonies. They may seal their children to them.
