COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A woman convicted of first-degree murder in the 1990 shooting death of her lover’s wife was denied parole Wednesday.
Jennifer Reali’s original parole date was 2030, but she became eligible this year after former Gov. Bill Ritter commuted her life sentence in January.
Reali told the parole board that she is no longer the same person who was manipulated by her boyfriend, Brian Hood, into killing his wife.
The board rejected her request, citing the nature of the crime and statements from the family of Dianne Hood. Reali must wait another five years to apply again.
Dianne Hood was gunned down as she left a meeting of lupus sufferers in Colorado Springs. Reali had disguised herself in military-style clothing and a ski mask and shot Dianne Hood with a .45-caliber revolver.
Brian Hood was sentenced to 22 years in prison following his conviction of second-degree murder and conspiracy in December 1991. He had claimed Reali had a “fatal attraction” for him and killed his wife on her own.
Dan Zuck, assistant district attorney in El Paso County, asked the board to defer Reali’s parole, according to The Denver Post. He said Reali bought the gun and ammunition and shot Dianne Hood a second time as the woman pleaded for her life.
A letter from the victim’s brother, David Moore, was read to the board.
“While Jennifer Reali now wishes to expand her quality of life here on earth, my sister’s decomposed body lies beneath the cold ground in a Colorado cemetery,” Moore wrote.
