When you get to your late 20s, birthdays aren’t exactly the event they were in your youth.
Not so with Rockies pitcher Jason Hammel, however. He turns 29 on Sept. 2, but he may be more excited about this birthday than any of the previous 28.
Why? Because his first child, Beckett William Hammel, is due the same day.
“It’s pretty cool,” Hammel said.
Beckett? Hammel lives near Boston, so he and his wife, Elissa, must have named the baby after a certain Red Sox right-hander. Or not.
“She just liked the name,” Hammel said.
While Hammel is eagerly looking forward to fatherhood, most Rockies had R&R on their mind during this all-star break. Huston Street said he is attempting a personal record for most steaks grilled on the patio. Carlos Gonzalez is hanging out with his nieces visiting from Venezuela. Ty Wigginton is Dr. Daddy at home near Charlotte, N.C.
Then there’s manager Jim Tracy. By design, he had no plans other than vegging out in front of his big screen in Denver and watching the All-Star Game on Tuesday night. Which begs the question: Would Tracy’s man cave be called a manager cave?
