Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez is sporting a removable cast over his bruised right wrist and will miss at least one game of the Rockies’ four-game series vs. Milwaukee starting Thursday night at Coors Field.
Gonzalez definitely won’t play Thursday and could miss more games in the series. He sat out four games in the Rockies’ seven-game road trip before the all-star break, and didn’t swing the bat in two others.
Gonzalez, who sustained a deep bone bruise in the wrist after slamming into the center-field fence at Coors Field while making a highlight-reel catch, underwent an MRI on Monday. The MRI came back negative for a fracture, but he received a cortisone shot to ease his pain.
“It hurts a little bit when I have to move it, but it’s not as bad as it was,” said Gonzalez. “As long as I can keep it (immobilized), it’s going to get better. Let’s wait a few days and let the shot work.”
The Rockies had a voluntary workout this afternoon, but Gonzalez wasn’t planning to swing a bat. He said doctors told him that fluid had formed around a tendon in the wrist, the same one he received a cortisone shot in late last season to relieve tendinitis.
“It’s like I’m getting that tendinitis again,” he said.
Last year’s injury robbed him of some power at the plate. He hit .378 in September while dealing with the injury, but hit five home runs after hitting a total of 17 in July and August.
Said Gonzalez, when asked if he were concerned the wrist would affect his power again: “Well, it affected me last year. It took a lot of power and strength from my swing. But there’s nothing I can say until I start playing again.”
