Exit 195 at Copper Mountain off Interstate 70 West Why check this out now: This 6-mile, out-and-back trek in the Eagles Nest Wilderness to the two lakes — currently so filled with water they’re surrounded by mushy bogs and some patches of snow at the top, at about 11,000 feet — is a moderately strenuous trail ideal for a group of mixed-level hikers. The dirt path, which is well marked, mostly smooth with occasional tree roots or rock obstacles and climbs steadily, rewards with fabulous views of Uneva Pass and, on a clear day, Lake Dillon in the distance. The elevation gain is about 1,300 feet, which makes for a good workout, and there are plenty of scenic spots along the way for a breather and a picnic. Park in the gravel area right along the exit (there are signs telling you where not to park) and then look for the trailhead just west. Don’t worry, after the first quarter-mile or so, you’ll leave the noise of the highway far behind.
Stay: We found the Robin Lane Townhomes in Silverthorne (800-544-8418, ) after trolling around online, and this turned out to be one sweet deal: three bedrooms that can sleep up to eight (one with two sets of bunk beds that were mighty small but fine for kids) with 3.5 baths, a well-supplied kitchen and big dining area, where we were able to make three meals a day happen. The real bonuses were the big backyard perfect for playing Frisbee, bocce and croquet, with a nice pond and views, as well as a hot tub, and the location was ideal for a long weekend during which we wanted access to all of Summit County’s hiking and biking goodies. Rates start at $199 a night in summer.
