A lost peacock was found in unincorporated Arapahoe County today, and animal control officers are trying to find his home.
The young peacock, weighing from 10 to 12 pounds, was captured at Emporia and Dayton streets at about noon today.
Mindy Edstrom, a spokeswoman for Arapahoe County, said the first call officers received of a peacock sighting was as early as 8 a.m.
Officials who located the bird initially thought it may have escaped from the Denver Zoo. The zoo later confirmed that the peacock found in Arapahoe County did not belong to them.
The bird has no identification tags or chips.
The Greenwood Village Animal shelter will look after the peacock for a few days. If no one claims the bird, the peacock will be transferred to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanctuary in Longmont.
Edstrom said having a peacock as a pet can be legal in some areas depending on the city and zoning in place.
