BRIGHTON, Colo.—An 84-year-old woman is facing felony theft charges after thousands of dollars were stolen from the West Adams Conservation District and given to a Buddhist temple.
According to an arrest affidavit, Mary Shibao forged the signature of the district’s board president on checks and then cashed them. Authorities say she put more than $36,000 into her personal account between 2005 and 2010.
Authorities say the woman wrote three checks to the Brighton Buddhist Sangha from the district’s account totaling nearly $9,000.
A mental competency hearing is scheduled Aug. 18, according to the Denver Post.
