The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman on felony animal cruelty charges Tuesday afternoon after they found 15 dogs, two cats and four pygmy goats in the back of her rental truck in high temperatures.
Holiday Ann Christie, 56, was moving from Idaho to Texas, when Larimer County sheriff’s deputies received a report of a dog at large in the 3800 block of East Mulberry Street in Fort Collins about 3 p.m.
By the time animal control officers arrived, the dog was dead, having been hit by a car, according to a news release.
Deputies then spotted the other animals in the rental truck, where the temperature was 106 degrees. The animals were suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion, officials said.
Deputies tried to arrest Christie and said she resisted them and attempted to flee.
The Larimer County Humane Society now has the animals, and Christie is in the Larimer County Jail on $2,500 bond. The humane society, which has authority to enforce animal cruelty laws in Larimer County, also set a $6,300 bond for the cost of caring for the animals.
Officials reminded pet owners to take animals outside only with shade and water and to use air conditioning when transporting them.
