Lightning struck a home on Poplar Lane in Centennial this afternoon, damaging the home and forcing the family to find another place to spend the night.

About 33 firefighters from the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority and the Littleton Fire Department doused the fire in less than 15 minutes.

Becky O’Guin, a spokeswoman for South Metro, said the fire caused significant damage to the interior and the exterior of the home but it was too early to give official estimates.

The five family members inside the home when lightning struck about 2:50 p.m. told firefighters they thought they heard a large explosion.

All five family members made it out of the home without any injuries. O’Guin said she believed the family was staying with relatives tonight.
