A congressional impasse on Wednesday threatened cancellation of a crucial runway rebuilding project at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport.

And, if a solution is not at hand by next Wednesday, airport officials will shelve the $7 million project and face the possibility of intermittent shutdowns of the airport throughout the coming year for emergency repairs.

Airport officials earlier this week were optimistic that Congress would approve Federal Aviation Administration funding that would pay for the project.

But House Republicans on Wednesday passed a modified bill authorizing the money, one that Senate Democrats said they would not approve.

Failure to resolve the issue could mean a shutdown of the FAA and furloughs for as many as 4,000 employees beginning Saturday.
