FRISCO, Colo.—Summit County and U.S. Forest Service officials say people dumping trash or driving through streams that flow into Dillon Reservoir are affecting drinking water supplies and fisheries.

They say they’re implementing a “Respect the River” program to help restore and preserve riparian and stream habitat near the reservoir. The dam is one source of Denver’s drinking water.

Officials with the Dillon Ranger District of the White River National Forest are making it illegal to camp within 100 feet of a body of water unless designated otherwise.

Forest Service officials also are educating campers and other outdoors enthusiasts not to drive through streams or dump trash or human waste in the water.
