CHEYENNE, Wyo.—Cowboys and cowgirls around the country are being honored with their own day for a seventh straight year.
The late Sen. Craig Thomas of Wyoming in 2005 started the tradition of naming the fourth Saturday in July as National Day of the American Cowboy, which coincides with Cheyenne Frontier Days.
Republican Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso of Wyoming continued the tradition by introducing a resolution naming this Saturday as the National Day of the American Cowboy, and the U.S. Senate passed it.
The resolution notes the role ranchers play in the nation’s economy and says the cowboy archetype transcends ethnicity, gender, geographic boundaries and political affiliations.
