DENVER—The Denver teen injured by a grizzly in the Alaskan wilderness says the bear tackled him as he tried to run away.

Seventeen-year-old Samuel Gottsegen was in a group of seven students in a backcountry training course that happened up on a bear with cubs on Saturday night.

He told Denver’s KMGH-TV that the first person to go around a corner yelled that there was a bear and then started running backward. Then Gottsegen said he looked behind and saw the bear so he started running down the hill. He said the bear tackled him on the way down.

The bear bit Gottsegen in the chest, puncturing his lungs and breaking his ribs.

He and another teen from New York are being treated at a hospital in Anchorage.
