CASPER, Wyo.—The pilot of a twin-engine airplane that crashed at the Casper airport says a large bird hit and broke his windshield when he was just five or 10 feet above the runway as he was landing.

A National Transportation Safety Board report released on Friday says the pilot told investigators the bird covered the entire windshield of the Piper PA-31-350 as he was landing on June 30.

The pilot was the only person aboard and he wasn’t injured. He had taken off that morning from Broomfield, Colo.

The pilot says the plane’s left wing hand nose hit the ground. The NTSB says the left landing gear collapsed and both propellers were bent.

The agency hasn’t officially determined the cause.
