NEW YORK — New York’s attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, asked a federal court Tuesday to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act, arguing that the law violates the rights of gay couples who began legally marrying across the state Sunday.
In an interview, Schneiderman said he and his staff began preparing a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages, as soon as the state Legislature voted to legalize the unions last month.
