ST. JOHN, Mo. — An archer apologized Wednesday after an errant arrow sailed through the window of a house, striking a woman in the face as she ate a doughnut.
“I can’t explain how bad I feel,” Army Sgt. Robert “Ben” Joiner, 26, said Wednesday. He faces two felony charges: second-degree assault and armed criminal action.
The arrow traveled more than 100 yards, from Joiner’s backyard, where he was practicing for an archery contest, through thick woods and into a neighbor’s backyard, where it crashed through a window.
Margaret Shofner, 80, was sitting at the kitchen table.
“It was like a blur,” Shofner said. “I reached up, this black line went across the front of my face. I reached up and pulled it out.”
Doctors told Shofner that the arrow lodged in her jawbone but did not break it. She lost a tooth and needed three stitches above her lip.
