The Broncos have made their first trade of the 2011 season.

The team on Wednesday sent wide receiver Jabar Gaffney to the Washington Redskins in exchange for 23-year-old defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

Jarmon played in five games for the Redskins last year and recorded a half sack, with three total tackles.

“Jeremy is an athletic defensive lineman with great versatility,” Broncos executive John Elway said. “We are looking forward to having him as Bronco.”

The Broncos should save some money by shipping off Gaffney, 30, who was set to make a salary of $2.4 million this year.

“I enjoyed it here,” Gaffney said. “It’s a great football city. Sounds like they’re changing things around here.”

Asked what he knows about the Redskins, Gaffney said: “I know coach (Mike) Shanahan is all about winning.”
