Chatfield State Park’s swim beach was temporarily closed today, after routine water tests revealed an increased level of E. coli bacteria.
The spike in bacteria levels was likely caused by recent heavy rains and high temperatures in the area, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
This is the second time this month that the swim beach, located near Littleton, was closed because of increased bacteria levels.
The water quality tests, required by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment as well as the Colorado Board of Health, are performed at least once a week.
Park staff closed the beach this morning and took new water samples to monitor the bacteria levels. The water will be tested daily until bacteria levels return to normal.
