Police are investigating an alleged sex assault in which two men impersonating police officers attacked a woman in Aurora early Sunday morning.
A woman driving in the 10400 block of East Alameda Avenue, was pulled over by two men she believed were police officers, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.
The woman described the suspects’ vehicle as a “white police-type sedan” with an emergency-style light bar and rotating lights.
The first man approached her door and ordered her out of her car. At some point, a second man joined him, and the two sexually assaulted the woman on the sidewalk of Alameda Avenue.
The two suspects then got back in their car and fled the scene.
Each suspect wore a dark blue “police style uniform,” a gunbelt and a badge.
Since the attack took place near the Denver-Aurora border, the woman was concerned that the suspects might be Aurora officers. She called Denver police, who conducted the initial investigation and collected DNA evidence.
As the investigation developed, the Aurora police sex crimes unit took control.
The first suspect was described as being 30 to 40 years old, 6 feet, 1 inch tall with black spiked hair. He had no facial hair at the time of the attack.
The second man was described as being 40 to 50 years old, 5 feet, 6 inches to 5 feet, 8 inches tall, with gray hair, a thick mustache and a “potbelly.”
Aurora police are offering an award of up to $2,500 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the two suspects.
Police are working with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, which reported a similar incident the next day.
At 3:30 p.m. on Monday, a woman reported being pulled over by a similar vehicle at Boweles Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard, said Jacki Kelley, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman in that investigation was not assaulted.
“The manner in which the stop was done was very similar,” Kelley said. “There is too much to ignore, but we really don’t know if we are dealing with the same suspect.”
The woman described the man as having a “belly,” with brown to black hair with some gray in it and a dark mustache. He appeared “50ish” and was wearing an outfit similar to the one described in Aurora.
She did not see a second man.
The man approached the woman’s door and ordered her to get out.
Suspicious of the man’s uniform, the woman refused. When the man yelled at her again, she pulled out her cell phone and called police.
The man got back in the car and fled.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call sex crimes Detective Ron Hahn at 303-739-6066.
