BRIGHTON, Colo.—Brighton police have arrested a city utilities department employee accused of falsely reporting she was robbed of cash and checks belonging to the city.
Police say 41-year-old Bernadette Haigh reported being robbed Friday of city cash and checks that were intended for deposit in a bank. Investigators say they suspect the report was a hoax and that Haigh took the deposits herself and gave them to an accomplice.
Police have identified the alleged accomplice as 47-year-old Clarence Puller, who is on parole for drug-related charges and has active warrants for his arrest. His whereabouts Monday weren’t immediately known.
Haigh was being held Monday on pending charges of felony theft, false reporting and conspiracy. It wasn’t clear if she had a lawyer who could comment on her behalf.
