The east Denver toddler who died this morning had bruises that have authorities investigating the circumstances, Denver Police Lt. Matt Murray said this afternoon.

“When officers arrived they saw obvious bruising to the body of the child,” he said of the 18-month-old girl. “We’re treating this as a suspicious death at this point, but we will be investigating the cause of this death along with the medical examiner’s office.”

Police were called to a unit in the Oak Park Condominium complex at 10150 East Virginia Avenue just after 7 a.m., after someone reported the child wasn’t breathing.

The girl was taken to an area hospital, where she died. Her name has not been released. Murray said an autopsy is planned.

He said he did not have immediate access to information about who called 9-1-1 and whether the residence belonged to the child’s parents or other caretakers.
