Friends and family of Kurt L. Levias Jr. will gather near Denver’s Bluebird Theater Thursday evening to remember the 21-year-old man who was shot and killed outside a rap competition there seven years ago.
His killer has never been caught.
The memorial will be at 5:30 p.m. at East Colfax Avenue at Cook Street, where a similar event was held in 2007 to attract attention that might help lead to an arrest, a spokeswoman for the memorial said.
According to news reports at the time of the slaying, at least 100 people were fighting outside the theater after the “Starterz in tha Game Tour.”
Levias reportedly went to his sister’s defense when he saw a man who went by the street name Simm Ryder — characterized as a rapper’s bodyguard and 6 feet, 4 inches tall and 240 pounds — strike his sister with his fist.
Levias was shot six times in the chest.
At the time of his death, Levias was working on a proposal to start a youth center for troubled children, as well as tutoring for school.
The murder has been profiled on the TV show “America’s Most Wanted” and on its website.
