The grandmother of the 15-month-old girl who was found dead in a southeast Denver condo was released from jail today after being briefly detained by Denver police.

Kimberly Powell, 48, was arrested on an investigation of child abuse resulting in the death of Amber Enard, said Lt. Matt Murray, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.

After spending the night in custody, Powell was released this afternoon after police determined they did not have enough evidence to hold her, Murray said.

“At this point, Denver police do not believe they have enough evidence to go forward to the District Attorney, but we will continue the investigation, part of which will be the results of the autopsy,” Murray said.

Police were called to a unit in the Oak Park Condominium complex at 10150 E. Virginia Ave. just after 7 a.m., after someone reported the child wasn’t breathing.

Police said there were bruises on Amber’s body.

Amber was taken to an area hospital, where she died.

Few details about the investigation have been released and White would not say whether Powell was at the residence when Amber stopped breathing.

The cause of death is pending autopsy results from the Denver coroner.

Police are calling the case a death investigation, White said.

On Wednesday, Amber’s father, Emanuel Enard, told 9News, he found Amber unconscious when he woke up.

“We thought she had suffocated. When my wife found her, she found her with her face in the pillow,” Enard told 9News.

No other arrest have been made in the case.
