WASHINGTON — The military’s latest test of the fastest aircraft ever built ended Thursday with the hypersonic vehicle crashing into the Pacific Ocean, although officials said they were able to gather “unique data ” from the effort.
The goal is to enable the military to carry out what it calls a “prompt global strike.”
The Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 was launched on a rocket at Vandenberg Air Force Base. After nine minutes, it crashed into the ocean.
