One of the three nuns who was arrested during a 2002 protest at a Weld County missile silo, then tangled with authorities over how to pay the restitution, has died.

Jackie Hudson, 76, died of blood cancer Aug. 3, the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids announced Thursday.

In 2002, Hudson and fellow nuns Ardeth Platte and Carol Gilbert were charged with destruction of national defense materials and injury to government property for damaging a fence during the Weld County protest.

Hudson and Gilbert were sentenced to 30 months in prison, and Platte to 41 months. The women also were ordered to pay $3,080 in restitution.

The restitution created a new round of problems for the sisters, who said paying money to the government would violate their beliefs in nonviolence because it would go to the military. The women proposed a food drive instead, the proceeds of which went to the Denver Rescue Mission.
