It was a foregone conclusion that three-time defending champion Mullen, riding a 33-game winning streak, would open the 2011 season as the favorite in Class 5A. Now, it’s unanimous.
The Mustangs, who return arguably the state’s best quarterback in senior Cyler Miles, received all 15 first-place votes in The Denver Post’s 5A preseason media poll released Monday morning. Regis Jesuit, the team Mullen beat to win its third-consecutive title last December, will begin the season ranked second.
Grandview is No. 3, followed by Cherokee Trail, Grand Junction and Chaparral. Columbine, Highlands Ranch, Bear Creek and Ralston Valley round out the top 10.
Defending 4A champion Valor Christian picked up 12 of the 13 first-place votes and will begin the season at No. 1 in that classification. Wheat Ridge, which got the other first-place vote, is second.
In 3A, reigning champion Elizabeth will open at the top spot. Vista Ridge, a surprise semifinalist last season, is No. 2.
The closest vote came in 2A, where Florence edged Brush for the No. 1 spot. Florence received five first-place votes and had 105 total points, narrowly ahead of Brush (two first-place votes, 98 points) and defending champion Olathe.
Five different teams — Florence, Brush, Olathe, Faith Christian and Buena Vista — garnered first-place votes.
Burlington (1A), Hoehne (8-man) and Fleming (6-man) open as the favorites in their respective classifications.
The Denver Post poll surveys media members from around the state, with a total of 30 different members voting in the classifications they cover.
