A look at the happenings at Broncos training camp Tuesday:

Position battle

Rookie second-round pick Rahim Moore continues to work alongside Brian Dawkins as the first-team free safety, but the competition isn’t over.

Today, second-year safety Kyle McCarthy got some first-team snaps during 7-on-7 passing drills and in some drills focused on stopping the run. In the second-team base defense, McCarthy was still in at safety, alongside rookie Quinton Carter. That likely means 2009 draft picks Darcel McBath and David Bruton are on the roster bubble, hoping to secure spots because of special-teams play. Bruton might have an edge there because he has been the top special-teams tackler over the last two years and is the faster gunner on the roster.

Highlight

The Broncos’ defensive line might be without two of its best players — the injured Ty Warren and Marcus Thomas — but the other players aren’t slacking off in their absence. The rest of the linemen stayed on the field after practice for an intense conditioning session. Starting in a three-point stance, the players sprinted 10 yards, and then dropped down for 10 push-ups. They repeated that interval the length of the football field.

Lowlight

Wide receiver Eric Decker joined the long list of wide receivers who have missed practice time. The second-year receiver was pulled from the field as a precautionary measure for his left foot. Decker said he expects to be back at practice on Wednesday, but it still isn’t good for a group that has already had Brandon Lloyd, Eddie Royal, Britt Davis and Matthew Willis all miss some practice time in the last week.

Quarterback watch

Kyle Orton — Effectively led the first-team offense in late-game situational work. He was also was 1-for-4 in a team red zone drill, with a screen-pass touchdown to Eddie Royal.

Tim Tebow — Had fewer opportunities to throw in the run-focused practice, but he did execute a perfect flea-flicker screen pass to Daniel Fells for a big gain.

Brady Quinn — Quinn was intercepted by Perrish Cox in a red zone drill after being chased by defensive tackle Ryan McBean.

Adam Weber — Got limited work in team drills, but did throw a touchdown in the red zone to D’Andre Goodwin.

Quotable

“We used to call for tickets, and they thought we were brothers or something. But they obviously hadn’t seen us.”

— New Broncos wide receiver Greg Orton, who went to Purdue just after Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton finished his career as a Boilermaker.

Camp facts

The Broncos will practice once on Wednesday, from 2:20-5 p.m. The practice is free and open to the public.
