Getting your player ready...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Just as it appeared the Osi Umenyiora saga had come to an end, his training camp took another unexpected turn when the Giants announced he had arthroscopic knee surgery Friday and is expected to miss three to four weeks.

The surgery was to remove debris from his right knee, which had swelled after each of the team’s three practices this week. The defensive end practiced for the first time Monday after a brief contract holdout.

“It was better to do it now as opposed to midseason,” Umen- yiora said. “It was going to have to be done, the only question was when. If I’m going to miss a little while, I would prefer it be now than at the crucial part of our season. It’s the best decision for the team and myself.”

Pryor considering appeal.

Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor could appeal the five-game suspension levied against him by the NFL should he be chosen in Monday’s supplemental draft.

Pryor gave up his final season with the Buckeyes following an investigation into the team’s memorabilia-for-cash scandal. He would have had to sit out five games had he chosen to return to Ohio State.

Pryor’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Thursday, “We accept that voluntarily.” But the player’s attorney, David Cornwell, said Friday it’s “likely” the five-game punishment will be appealed once Pryor signs an NFL contract.

Burress to play for Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Receiver Plaxico Burress, who has been hobbled by a sprained left ankle, will make his Jets debut Sunday against the Bengals.

It will be his first game since Nov. 23, 2008, at Arizona while with the Giants. He was signed by the Jets last month after serving a 20-month prison sentence on a gun charge for accidentally shooting himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub.

Running back Shonn Greene will not play as he recovers from what the team has called a “low-grade skin infection” on his right foot.

Footnotes.

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson did not play against the Browns because of a bruised shoulder.

• Drew Pearson, Charles Haley and Larry Allen will be enshrined in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor on Nov. 6.

• Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese, who announced his retirement from network broadcasting in February after 24 years with ABC and ESPN, is joining the Dolphins’ radio broadcast team.
