A 14-year-old boy spent his first full day of school in the hospital after he ran a red light while riding his bicycle and collided with a car.

The boy, a freshman at Northglenn High School, was riding northbound when he rode into the crosswalk despite the red light, said Matt Barnes, a spokesman for the Thornton Police Department.

A 79-year-old man in a 2005 Honda Civic hit the boy, who flew onto the windshield, cracking it.

Medics flew the boy to Children’s Hospital, where he was in critical condition today.

Barnes said the driver, who was alone in the car, will not be charged because he “did nothing wrong.”

Joe Ferdani, a spokesman for Adams 12 school district, said counselors were available today to help friends of the injured boy.

Barnes said he prefers not to release the boy’s name out of respect for his privacy.
