DENVER—NASCAR driver Ronnie Hults has been suspended indefinitely after testing positive for marijuana, but Hults says he got the drug legally as a prescription for chronic pain.

Hults was told three weeks ago before a big race there was a problem involving a drug test. Hults tells KUSA-TV () he was not high when he got behind the wheel.

A voter-approved amendment to the state constitution allows registered patients with certain medical conditions to use limited amounts of marijuana.

Hults is a driver in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. NASCAR announced on Friday that Hults was suspended indefinitely for violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy.
