CLEVELAND — Slugger Jim Thome accepted a trade from Minnesota on Thursday night to return to the Indians, the team he started with and one hoping its career home run leader can help it catch the first- place Tigers in the AL Central.
Thome, 40, waived a no-trade clause in his contract to clear his return to the Indians, who have lost six of their last seven games amid a rash of injuries. Thome’s arrival will soften the loss of injured designated hitter Travis Hafner.
The Twins will receive a player to be named by Oct. 15.
• The Twins placed left-hander Francisco Liriano (shoulder) on the disabled list.
Footnotes.
Brian Wilson is making slow progress in his comeback from elbow inflammation, and Giants manager Bruce Bochy is unsure whether the all-star closer will be ready to come off the disabled list next week when he’s eligible.
• Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson has returned to Atlanta to have his right shoulder re-evaluated by team doctors.
• In anticipation of Hurricane Irene, Sunday’s game between the Marlins and Phillies was moved to Saturday at 11:05 p.m. MDT, creating a day-night doubleheader. The Red Sox also moved Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics to Saturday night as part of a day-night doubleheader.
