Before it hit land, Hurricane Irene trimmed at least 18 holes off the PGA Tour’s first playoff event and forced several more schedule changes and cancellations along the East Coast.
With up to 10 inches of rain expected Sunday in the New York area, the PGA Tour decided to turn the Barclays into a 54-hole event, with the top 100 players advancing to the second playoff tournament next week in Boston. If conditions worsen before 54 holes are complete, the tournament could revert to 36 holes.
The New York Mets postponed their weekend games against the Atlanta Braves.
The split doubleheader today between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles was postponed. The game originally scheduled for tonight will become part of a split doubleheader Sunday, and the opener will be played Sept. 8.
MLB moved Sunday’s games at Philadelphia and Boston to today to make them part of day-night doubleheaders, but the Phillies rescheduled the night game to Sept. 15. The Phillies play the Florida Marlins, and the Red Sox play the Oakland Athletics.

• Today’s MLS game between the Portland Timbers and D.C. United was postponed, with a makeup date to be announced next week.
• Sunday’s title game of the Little League World Series has been moved to 10 a.m. MDT.
