NEW YORK — Under clear skies, airlines that serve Northeastern cities started to return their planes to service Monday, but many warned that travelers whose plans were thrown into disarray by Hurricane Irene could still face scheduling problems and delays.
Industry analysts said it could take about a week to unwind the snarled traffic caused by the approximately 10,000 to 12,000 flights canceled because of the hurricane, although it depended on the airline and the airport.
Many flights were already fully booked in the week leading up to the Labor Day weekend, a period of heavy travel.
