The planned Cabela’s development — in the works since 2004 — took a big step backward when the national sporting goods and hunting equipment retailer said recently that anchoring a Wheat Ridge location won’t happen.

Instead, the retailer will sell the property, an 80-acre site at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Colorado 58.

This came as a surprise to many, especially Wheat Ridge officials who recently approved an official development plan and a specific development plan that includes a Walmart store as well as the Cabela’s outlet.

Wheat Ridge City Manager Patrick Goff said, “We’re disappointed, but all that work has not been wasted.”
