DENVER—Animal rights activists in Colorado are protesting the hunting of dolphins and small whales in Japan.

Protesters plan a rally at the Japanese Consulate in Denver on Thursday, the start of the dolphin hunting season. They say it’s one of over 28 demonstrations marking the day around the world.

Fishermen in one traditional whaling town in western Japan are delaying the start of their annual hunt because of an approaching typhoon.

The town was the site of the controversial U.S. documentary “The Cove,” which critically depicts the dolphin hunt there. The movie was produced by a Boulder nonprofit, the Oceanic Preservation Society.
